Oy-Mittelberg can be explored along a variety of trails, lakes, churches and local traditions. Hiking, cycling and views
The “Auf Seiner Spur” faith and church trail is around 42 kilometres long. It passes through the pre-Alpine natural and cultural landscape across the entire municipality of Oy-Mittelberg and connects numerous notable churches and chapels. You can complete the trail on foot or by bicycle and divide it into three stages.
Oy-Mittelberg offers easy to moderately difficult, well-signposted hiking routes around Rottachsee, GrĂĽntensee, Schwarzenberger Weiher and Sticher Weiher. These include numerous circular routes. The stated difficulty levels provide guidance when choosing; the routes are spread across several lakes and ponds.
The Grüntensee circular trail starts at the car park by the Schützenheim in Haslach and follows a loop of just under twelve kilometres around the lake. Both the starting point and approximate length are therefore specified. A Nordic walking loop starts at the car park by St. Michael’s Church on the Panorama Trail in Mittelberg. The Panorama Trail offers views across the Alpine range, including the Zugspitze and Säuling.
There is also a cycling route from Mittelberg to Rottachsee: it runs through woodland and meadows into the Rottach Valley. At the lake, the “Moosaikreich” offers information and discoveries about the Allgäu Moor Alliance. The Steinmeile is a natural history and geology trail around Oy-Mittelberg. It covers the geology of the Allgäu and the Mittelberg ridge, the formation of the landscape and the cultural history of the region.
Churches and local traditions
St. Michael’s Parish Church in Mittelberg was built in 1453. It stands at an elevation of 1,036 metres above sea level and is one of the highest parish churches in Germany. In Maria Rain stands the Parish and Pilgrimage Church of the Holy Cross, built in 1496. The construction dates and elevation provide specific points of reference for understanding the two churches and their connections to their respective locations.
Another feature of Mittelberg is Germany’s largest hiking bench. In Haslach, the annual Viehscheid cattle drive in autumn is a local tradition. These landmarks and customs complement the trails and churches with a notable feature and a recurring local tradition.
GrĂĽntensee in summer and winter trails
In summer, water sports, swimming, fishing and sailing are possible at GrĂĽntensee in Haslach. At the bathing area in Haslach, the GrĂĽntensee treetop adventure park, with its Canadian canoes, offers an experience for the whole family. The lake therefore offers a range of activities, from water sports to canoeing.
Many trails and themed trails in the area around Oy-Mittelberg are suitable for pushchairs and offer play opportunities for families. In winter, Mittelberg has cleared winter hiking trails and groomed sledding slopes. Hiking and sledding are two specific activities that differ from the summer options at GrĂĽntensee.
