Sulzberg lies in the heart of the foothills of the Upper Allgäu Alps, about ten kilometres south of Kempten. On clear views to the south, you can see the Allgäu Alps. The castle ruins, Heinrichweg and Rottachsee offer different highlights: historic architecture and views, trails with historical stops, and activities on the water. This guide helps you match these local attractions to your own interests for your stay.

Castle Ruins and Views

Sulzberg Castle Ruins are among the largest and best-preserved castle ruins in the Upper Allgäu. A viewing terrace on the keep offers sweeping views. A visit therefore combines two things: the historic site itself and the view from its tower.

The Heinrichweg: Two Routes of Equal Length

The Heinrichweg consists of two routes, each 10.5 kilometres long. Both pass historical highlights and feature information boards and play stations for children. The trail starts at Sulzberg town hall and passes Jodbad Sulzbrunn. Since both routes are the same length, they do not differ in distance; the historical stops and route itself are the main points to consider when choosing between them. Information boards add context to the sights along the way, while the play stations are another feature of the trail.

Activities at Rottachsee

Rottachsee is located in the municipality of Sulzberg. There are opportunities for swimming, sailing, surfing, diving and fishing. The options include activities in, on and beside the water. This makes the lake a distinct highlight alongside a visit to the castle ruins or a route on the Heinrichweg. Which of these options suits your stay depends on whether you prefer spending time by the water, walking a trail or exploring the castle’s history.

Getting to Sulzberg

By car, Sulzberg can be reached from the A7 via the Allgäu interchange and the A980 towards Lindau. There is also a Sulzberg motorway exit. These details provide guidance for your journey and can be taken into account when planning your route.

The Upper Allgäu as a Wider Travel Destination

Beyond Sulzberg, the Upper Allgäu offers other attractions in different places. In Oberstdorf, the World Championship cross-country trail network at the Nordic Centre Oberstdorf/Allgäu includes more than 30 different route options. These include a 6.25-kilometre loop with the steep Burgstall climb. Also in Oberstdorf, visitors can tour the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill; the tower lift takes visitors to the viewing platform on the ski jump tower. These attractions offer a separate glimpse of the wider Upper Allgäu travel destination and should be distinguished from Sulzberg’s local highlights.

In Immenstadt-Bühl, the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre is located directly by Alpsee. It features a free interactive exhibition about animals, plants, their habitats and the special features of the protected area. In Immenstadt-Diepolz, an interactive open-air museum in historic buildings documents the lives of Allgäu mountain farmers; opening hours vary by season. These examples broaden the picture of the Upper Allgäu to include nature and regional history, without attributing these attractions to Sulzberg.
