If you are considering Zenting as a place to stay, three hiking routes provide a concrete starting point for planning your outings: they differ in approximate length, route and endpoint. The approximately 8.5-kilometre Panorama Loop runs from Zenting via Daxstein and back to Zenting. The approximately 11-kilometre Brotzeit Loop starts and ends in Ranfels and passes through Zenting. The approximately 12-kilometre Lindenweg starts and ends in Zenting; a detour to the “Kleiner Aschenstein” viewpoint is possible.

The route information comes from a Sonnenwald hiking map, which appears to have been published in 2019. Please check the information against current sources when planning your specific hike.

Compare hiking routes around Zenting

In terms of approximate length, the Panorama Loop is shorter than the other two; the Brotzeit Loop is about 2.5 kilometres longer, and the Lindenweg about 3.5 kilometres longer, than the Panorama Loop. As for the route, two trails start and finish in Zenting, while one starts and ends in Ranfels. On the Lindenweg, a detour to Kleiner Aschenstein is an optional addition. This means you can compare route length, endpoint and the optional detour as specific differences when choosing a hike.

Freyung-Grafenau as the wider setting

The Bavarian Forest National Park extends into the district of Freyung-Grafenau, the wider travel destination. It opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. The 2024 zoning map designates 75.37 percent of its area as natural zones.

One striking landscape in the district of Freyung-Grafenau is the Buchberger Leite wild stream gorge. There, steep rock formations force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deeply confined channel. Remnants of primeval forest have been preserved in the gorge’s moss- and fern-rich woodlands. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail, with information boards and an accompanying brochure, runs through the Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai. Historic log-driving walls, tunnels carved into the rock and surface canals bear witness to centuries of human activity there.

Cultural history is also part of getting to know the wider travel destination of Freyung-Grafenau: built around 1700, the Schramlhaus is now Freyung’s oldest farmstead and, in its original state, one of the oldest in the district. The house is home to the Wolfstein Local History Museum. It also houses more than a hundred preserved original examples of reverse glass painting, a form of sacred folk art.

In the wider travel destination of Freyung-Grafenau, the treetop walk is part of the Lusen National Park Centre near Neuschönau. The wildlife enclosure near Neuschönau gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the national park and its native wildlife. The wildlife enclosure’s circular trails are suitable for small children who cannot yet manage long distances.

At the Gabreta Archaeological Experience Park, buildings have been reconstructed based on original Celtic structures; they symbolically represent Celtic finds discovered on the hill of Paul Freund. Expert-guided tours about the life of the Celts can also be booked. Bread baking is one of the hands-on activities for visitors; this offering may change.
