Freyung: Ski offers, themed trails and culture

Freyung offers alpine skiing and cross-country skiing in winter, with named facilities and specific trail lengths. Historic buildings, themed trails and annual festivals complement these sporting activities. Winter activities in Freyung

The Freyung-Geyersberg ski and snowboard beginner centre has a 540-metre double drag lift. The easy ski slope in Solla is suitable for beginners and more experienced skiers. Lift operations depend on sufficient snow cover, so check the current operating times before making concrete plans. The Freyung-Kreuzberg cross-country skiing centre has 30 kilometres of classic trails, plus a four-kilometre skating trail. Historic places and regional art

The Schramlhaus was built around 1700 and is the oldest farmstead in Freyung. More than a hundred original reverse-glass paintings are on display there. Wolfstein Castle was built around 1200 by Bishop Wolfger von Erla of Passau. The histories of the two buildings offer different points of reference in time: the castle dates back to around 1200, while the Schramlhaus was built about five centuries later.

Numerous artists from the Bavarian Forest–Bohemian Forest region regularly exhibit art and cultural works at the gallery in the Europahaus Freyung. This adds a distinct focus on regional exhibitions to the historic buildings. Themed trails and annual festivals

The Kreuzberg Chapel Trail – Path of Reflection was established around Kreuzberg, a district of Freyung, and complements the revived St. Anna pilgrimage. There are ten information boards and four chapels along the trail; the oldest chapel was built in 1509. The eight-kilometre “People and Nature in the Buchberger Leite” themed hiking trail runs between Freyung and Ringelai. Information boards and numbered posts explain the stream and river system, the power of water, the historic timber rafting industry and the region’s geological history, including the Pfahl rock formations. The trails therefore have different themes: pilgrimage and chapels on the one hand, and water, historic rafting and geology on the other.

Annual festivals are also part of the year in Freyung. The “In-der-Freyung” Historical Society organises the traditional Wolfaustreiben on Freyung’s town square every year shortly before St. Martin’s Day.
