The Protected Ensemble on Hauptstraße

The protected Hauptstraße ensemble comprises two rows of houses on either side of the main road. The focus is therefore on a group of buildings on both sides of the road, not just one house. Anyone interested in the character of the village and its architectural heritage will find a distinctive sense of place here in Innernzell.

Nature in the Wider Freyung-Grafenau Destination

As part of the wider region, Bavarian Forest National Park extends into the Freyung-Grafenau district. It opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. According to the 2024 zoning map, 75.37 percent of its area is designated as natural zones. These figures refer to the national park in the wider Freyung-Grafenau destination.

Another regional landscape is the Buchberger Leite wild gorge. There, steep rock bars force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deeply constricted bed. Remnants of primeval forest have survived in the gorge woodlands rich in mosses and ferns. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels hewn into the rock and above-ground channels also bear witness to centuries of human activity. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail with information boards and an accompanying brochure runs through the Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai.

Culture and Family-Friendly Destinations in the Region

In Freyung stands the Schramlhaus, built around 1700. It is now the oldest farmhouse in Freyung and, in terms of its original condition, one of the oldest in the Freyung-Grafenau district. The house contains more than a hundred original examples of reverse glass painting, a form of sacred folk art. The Wolfstein Local History Museum is also housed in the Schramlhaus. This makes the site in Freyung a place where regional architectural history, a collection and a local history museum come together.

Near Neuschönau, the wildlife enclosure provides insights into the national park and its native wildlife. The circular trails are suitable for small children who are not yet able to cover long distances.

Consider which places you would like to visit and factor their specific locations into your accommodation comparison.
