Jandelsbrunn can be explored through specific outdoor activities: cycling routes run through the village and from there towards Obernzell, and a signposted hiking trail starts at the town hall and leads to the Steinerfurth Beaver Adventure Trail. There is also the Poppenreut golf course, a recreational lake near the village and the pilgrimage church on the Wollaberg.

Cycling routes and a hike to the Beaver Adventure Trail

The Adalbert Stifter Cycle Route runs from Röhrnbach via Waldkirchen, Jandelsbrunn and Neureichenau to Haidmühle, where it connects to the Danube-Ilz Cycle Route. Jandelsbrunn is therefore one stop on a longer cycling route that passes through several towns and connects to another cycle route. The Danube-Moldau Cycle Route is also useful for finding your way by bike: from Jandelsbrunn, you can follow it south towards Obernzell.

The town hall in Jandelsbrunn is a specific starting point for a hike. From there, a signposted hiking trail, 3.8 kilometres long, leads to the Steinerfurth Beaver Adventure Trail; the estimated walking time is approximately one hour and ten minutes. The trail itself is also one of the attractions in Jandelsbrunn. This lets you include a named hiking route and its destination in your excursion plans without confusing the trail’s length with a circular route.

Golf and recreational lake

The Poppenreut golf course, designed by Keith Preston, is located in the municipality of Jandelsbrunn. The 18-hole championship course offers a sporting challenge for beginners and experienced players alike. The course has a driving range with covered tees, a putting green and a practice bunker. These facilities provide several ways to practise in addition to playing on the course.

The recreational lake is near the village and has parking, changing rooms and sanitary facilities. There is also a children’s playground and a beach volleyball court. Important when planning a visit to the water: there is no lifeguard supervision. In winter, ice stock sport is possible when the ice is thick enough. This activity is therefore explicitly dependent on ice conditions and is not an option year-round.

Pilgrimage church on the Wollaberg

The history of the pilgrimage church on the Wollaberg also gives your stay a cultural point of interest. The church was built as early as the 13th century, burned down over the course of time and was rebuilt. It has been renovated. Its history is therefore quite different from the sporting and scenic activities in Jandelsbrunn.

Nature and culture in the wider destination of Freyung-Grafenau

In the wider destination of Freyung-Grafenau, Bavarian Forest National Park offers a different perspective on the region’s natural environment. It extends into the district of Freyung-Grafenau and opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. The 2024 zoning map designates 75.37 percent of its area as natural zones. The national park thus offers a broad-scale perspective, while the cycling and hiking routes in Jandelsbrunn describe specific local connections.

Another nature attraction in Freyung-Grafenau is the Buchberger Leite gorge. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail runs through the gorge between Freyung and Ringelai; information boards and an accompanying brochure provide additional details. In the gorge, steep rock barriers force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deeply confined channel. Remnants of primeval forest have survived in the moss- and fern-rich gorge forests. Historic log-driving walls, tunnels cut into the rock and above-ground canals also bear witness to centuries of human activity.

The cultural attractions in the wider destination also stand on their own. In Freyung is the Schramlhaus, built around 1700: it is the town’s oldest rural homestead and, in terms of its original character, is among the oldest in the district of Freyung-Grafenau. It houses the Wolfstein Local History Museum. The house includes more than one hundred original examples of reverse glass painting, a form of sacred folk art.
