Winter hiking: trails by the reservoir and to the Dreisessel
In Neureichenau, a 1 km winter hiking trail runs around the Riedelsbach reservoir. The nearby winter hiking trail to the Dreisessel is 3 km long, takes about an hour and leads to Dreisesselberg. The trails therefore differ both in length and destination: one is a loop by the reservoir, while the other is a hike to a named mountain. Winter conditions can vary.
Rock formations and views in the surrounding area
Klausgupf is a 929 m-high rock formation with views over the communities of the Three-Country Corner region. From Neureichenau, it can be reached via Michelklause. Hochstein is also nearby: this 1,332 m-high rock formation is part of the Dreisessel massif and offers distant views towards Bohemia.
The two viewpoints differ in elevation and the direction of their views: from Klausgupf, the view extends over the communities of the Three-Country Corner region, while from Hochstein it looks towards Bohemia. Directly below Hochstein is a memorial chapel to Bishop Johann Nepomuk Neumann of Philadelphia, who was canonised in 1963.
Forest trails and culture in Neureichenau
Ten themed stops along the forest trail introduce visitors to various aspects of experiencing the forest and sustainable forest management. This gives the route a different focus from the winter trails: it centres on forest themes rather than a waterside loop or a viewpoint.
The “Adalbert Stifter and the Forest” Museum at Rosenberger Gut is dedicated to the poet and painter Adalbert Stifter. Its name and dedication bring together the themes of forest and culture. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail, with information boards and an accompanying brochure, leads through the Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels cut into the rock and above-ground canals bear witness to centuries of human activity there.
