Wiesenttal brings together a range of interests for excursions: its network of hiking trails, the nature park information center in Muggendorf and the ruins of Neideck Castle, high above the valley.

Hiking: Trail Network and a Specific Route

Wiesenttal has an exceptionally well-maintained network of hiking trails. One clearly defined route is the Wiesenttal Tour: It is 35.0 km long, moderately difficult and runs along the Wiesent Valley between Muggendorf and Forchheim. Muggendorf is its starting point. The route’s length, difficulty level and course provide clear reference points for this hike.

Nature Park Information in Muggendorf

The information center for the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park is located at the Muggendorf train stop. It presents nature parks and the region’s characteristic flora and fauna in words and pictures.

Neideck: History, Views and Access

The ruins of Neideck Castle lie high above the Wiesent Valley in Franconian Switzerland. They bear witness to medieval history and offer views of the surrounding landscape.

For access, note that the ruins cannot be reached by car. Paths lead uphill to the ruins from the outdoor swimming pool in Streitberg and from the district of Haag. Plan your visit as an uphill walk and check parking arrangements separately, as conditions may change. In the wider Forchheim destination, the Neideck ruins and the Neideck Archaeological Park are accessible at all times. Follow the on-site guidance on safety and nature conservation.

Culture in the Wider Forchheim Destination

In the wider Forchheim destination, the Cultural Experience Franconian Switzerland hiking trail links cultural projects across more than 280 km in Forchheim district. Its length offers a different scale from the 35.0 km Wiesenttal Tour; its focus, meanwhile, is on connecting cultural projects. Local trail conditions may change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Wiesenthau Castle is also in the wider Forchheim destination. It is privately owned, used as a restaurant and can be visited by prior arrangement. Make arrangements before your arrival. Planning a visit is therefore different from planning an excursion focused mainly on a hiking route or viewpoint.
