Ebermannstadt: Island Old Town, Wiesent and Trails

Old Town, Architectural History and Market Square

The Marienkapelle is Ebermannstadt’s oldest surviving building. Its tower dates from the 14th century, while its rich late Baroque interior adds a different historical dimension. This means one building brings together the history of a medieval tower and a later interior. Chestnut trees line the market square, where you’ll find places to eat and shops. The offerings of individual businesses may change. The waterwheel is on the Wiesent and is one of Ebermannstadt’s landmarks. The Wiesent thus connects the island old town with another landmark beside the river.

Trails between the Old Town and the Plateau

The Island Loop is a very easy 2 km walking route around the old town, following the Wiesent. The Forest and Climate Trail is just under 8 km long and leads from the market square up to the plateau around Burg Feuerstein. The trails differ in both length and route: a short loop by the old town and river, compared with a considerably longer route to the plateau. You can therefore consider the town loop and the route from the market square towards Burg Feuerstein as two distinct trail options.

Astronomy and Heritage Railway

The Feuerstein Observatory offers insights into astronomy. Check the visiting arrangements before you travel. The Ebermannstadt–Behringersmühle heritage railway offers train rides; the operator provides up-to-date visitor information about scheduled trains and tickets. Check this information if you’re planning a ride. This gives you two different options: exploring astronomy or taking a ride on the heritage railway, each requiring its own advance planning.

Bus Connection through the Wiesent Valley

Bus route 389 connects Ebermannstadt with Pegnitz and provides public transport through the entire Wiesent Valley. This gives you a specific connection beyond the town for your travel plans.
