Pilgrimage and Museum
The Gößweinstein Basilica is visited by more than 160 groups of pilgrims each year. This annual figure may change over time. The Pilgrimage Museum features a collection of more than 100 life-size human figures, mostly made of wax. They originate from votive offerings made over the course of centuries.
The museum's location is also part of its history: it is housed in the former sexton's house, dating from the 18th century, in the Holy Precinct, right next to Balthasar Neumann's Baroque church. A cultural visit can therefore take in both the pilgrimage church and the museum with its distinctive collection of figures.
The Castle and Trails Around Gößweinstein
Gößweinstein Castle stands above the town of the same name in Franconian Switzerland. It is currently closed. When visits are possible, you can explore the castle on your own; check before your trip whether it has reopened to visitors.
The Balthasar Neumann Circular Hiking Trail follows roads and paths in and around Gößweinstein. It leads to the Kreuzberg pilgrimage site, Gernerfels, Gößweinstein Castle, Wagnershöhe and Fischersruh. The route thus links several named destinations rather than focusing on a single stop. Its described course covers both the town and its surroundings.
Climbing and Swimming
There are well over 400 established climbing routes in the Gößweinstein market municipality. Climbing is therefore a distinct activity alongside hiking. Gößweinstein's outdoor swimming pool is a natural swimming area and a swimming and bathing pond. The water is treated biologically.
These options each have a clear focus: the circular hiking trail leads to several destinations, while the climbing routes offer a separate activity and the outdoor swimming pool invites you to take a swim.
Kayaking and Other Activities
The Early Bird Kayak Tour by Leinen Los starts at Behringersmühle station in Gößweinstein and runs via Sachsenmühle for around 8.2 kilometres to Muggendorf. The route has a mild whitewater character and is also suitable for beginners. It is offered from May to September; check seasonal availability before your trip. The start and finish are in different places, as the tour ends in Muggendorf.
Kayak tours on the Wiesent are available through Leinen Los; availability may vary. Visitors can also play soccer golf and disc golf at the Leinen Los event grounds in Gößweinstein. An introductory course there offers the chance to learn archery. As availability may vary, check in advance what is on offer when you plan to visit.
