Riverside Promenade and Hiking Trail Network
The Muggendorf Riverside Promenade route runs directly along the banks of the Wiesent and connects the river landscape with another nature park attraction. It passes the Nature Park Information Centre, where an exhibition showcases the natural and cultural features and beauty of the Franconian Switzerland – Franconian Jura Nature Park. This allows you to combine outdoor activity with a visit focused on information and education, without equating the two offerings.
In the Muggendorf–Streitberg destination area, an extensive, exemplary marked hiking trail network opens up scenic highlights and popular viewpoints. The route along the Wiesent places a specific focus on the river. In addition, you can consider Streitberg as another destination for planning your trip.
Views over Muggendorf and the Wiesent Valley
On the Hohes Kreuz stands a 12-metre-high observation tower offering a 270-degree view. The tower is therefore a clearly defined viewpoint within the Muggendorf landscape. The Muggendorf Pavilion offers a different perspective. This traditional viewpoint stands on an isolated rock above Muggendorf and is also known in Franconian dialect as “Babylon”.
From the Muggendorf Pavilion, you can look out over Muggendorf town centre and the widening Wiesent Valley to Neideck Castle ruins at the point where the valley narrows again.
Nature Park, Caves and Regional History
The Franconian Switzerland – Franconian Jura Nature Park Information Centre in the Old Railway Station in Muggendorf presents the local flora and fauna, Franconian customs, the historic railway, and the formation and protection of caves in the nature park.
The Rosenmüller Cave, a former show cave that is easy to explore, lies above Muggendorf. The region’s history also reaches back to the end of the 18th century: At that time, the first cave explorers and Romantic travellers referred to it as “Muggendorfer Gebürg” before the name “Franconian Switzerland” became established.
Steam Railway, Felsensteig Trail and Mini-Golf
You can board and leave the Franconian Switzerland steam railway in Muggendorf. The Felsensteig trail has an alpine character and includes a section secured with a wire rope.
Mini-Golf Muggendorf is an 18-hole mini-golf course next to the town hall in Muggendorf.
