Trails, Moorland, and the Hörnle

Bad Kohlgrub is a stage on the Lake Constance–Königssee Cycle Route. The Meditation Trail in the Blue Land follows a different route: it begins in Bad Kohlgrub and ends in Ettal. These are two distinct route connections—the stage of a cycling route and a trail with explicitly stated starting and ending points.

The themed trail “Catch the Wolpertinger – Moritz in the Peat Bog” leads through meadows, forest, and moorland and includes a moorland nature trail. The Bad Kohlgrub Moorland Nature Trail is 1.51 kilometers long and runs as a loop from Rochus Chapel back to Rochus Chapel. This outlines both the landscape of the themed trail and the length and route of the loop; trail conditions may vary.

The Hörnle is another hiking destination in Bad Kohlgrub. You can reach it on foot or by cable car. For planning purposes, these options differ from the trails described above: at the Hörnle, there are two ways to get there, while the moorland nature trail is described as a loop of a fixed length. No difficulty rating or walking time is specified for the loop.

Rochus Chapel and St. Martin Parish Church

Rochus Chapel is not freely accessible to visitors. The main door leads to a small vestibule; the chapel itself is closed off by a barrier and can only be viewed from there. Since access arrangements may change, check the current rules before your visit. If you plan to visit the chapel, bear in mind that viewing it from the vestibule is the intended option.

Its history dates back to the period following the plague epidemic of 1633/1634: the local community built the votive church in the former plague cemetery and dedicated it to St. Roch, the patron saint against plague. A different cultural highlight is St. Martin Parish Church in the center of the village. Its interior is predominantly in the Rococo style. The two churches therefore differ both in their histories and in the designs described; Rochus Chapel also has its particular access restrictions.
