Nature

Villarodin-Bourget is part of the Vanoise National Park; more than one-third of its area lies within the core zone of the national park. Vallon de l’Orgère is an important access point to the core zone of Vanoise National Park. A national park refuge is located there.

The route in Vallon de l’Orgère has been designated a “Promenade confort”. Approximately 1.4 kilometres are accessible to people with reduced mobility; the path features tactile elements, a model and audio stations. At the same time, the route follows a marked discovery trail with visual, audio and tactile information elements.

Culture and History

Projecting stair towers and covered passageways crossing the street are among the characteristic architectural features of Villarodin. Along Rue Saint Antoine, traditional houses open onto a spacious square dominated by Saint-Julien Church, which is integrated into the village houses. Its bell tower has a tuff spire. Saint-Julien Church in Villarodin can be visited on request at the town hall.

At the exit of Villarodin towards Avrieux lies the Saint-Sébastien Chapel. After repeatedly falling into disrepair, it was relocated and rebuilt from the 16th century onwards; the last renovation took place in 1931. Today, it is considered a simple oratory. The altarpiece of Saint Catherine has smooth columns decorated with faux marble and a central niche containing a statue of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.

The medieval archaeological site of Les Tierces comprises levelled residential units on a sloping plateau above the Arc Valley, a medieval path and a chapel. Side streets in Villarodin lead to walled gardens and paths in the nearby forest.

The Ouvrage de Saint-Gobain is a well-preserved fort that has now been demilitarised. It is managed by an association and open to the public. Fort Saint-Gobain is a fortified structure of the Alpine Maginot Line from the 1939–1945 war, with galleries, barracks and technical rooms; the combat blocks are also accessible. A marked circular route enables visitors to explore it independently. This includes information panels in French, Italian and English, as well as an outdoor path up to the fort offering unobstructed views over the valley.
