Winter and Trails
The route over the Hourquette d’Ancizan leads from Saint-Lary-Soulan to Ancizan. The ascent begins at an altitude of 812 m, and from the summit the descent leads towards Lac de Payolle. The path to Lac d’Arou, which lies at an altitude of 1,786 m, also leads from the Hourquette.
Ancizan is a stage on the GR 105, which is connected to the Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. The Boucle d’Ousten is a 4.09 km walking route that starts and ends in Ancizan. It leads from Ancizan to the small hamlet of Ousten and then downhill towards Guchen. A hike to Lac de Montarrouye is possible from Payolle.
Culture and History
The Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste, a 12th-century chapel, is located in the Ousten district. It has a single-nave layout, a semicircular apse, a bell tower partially clad in slate, and a wrought-iron cross.
The Maison Oustalet in Ancizan is a Renaissance house and bears witness to the village’s important textile history. Its features include high attic floors beneath a broken roof, stepped gables, and a large dormer window with elaborate sculptural decoration.
The residential building of the Ferme Paoulat has largely preserved its layout from the 16th and 17th centuries. The complex includes an external round stair tower and a habitable rectangular tower with three storeys.
The Maison Castet at 3 Rue de Loumet in Ancizan dates from 1568 and can be recognised by its distinctive stair tower. The historic villagescape also retains intact window frames and weathered wooden barn doors, recalling the former era of the cloth trade.
The Musée de la Vallée d’Aure is an ecomuseum on the Route de Saint-Lary in Ancizan. It presents the valley’s past in 16 reconstructed everyday scenes featuring historical objects, contemporary photographs, traditional costumes, eyewitness accounts, and traditional music. In its gallery, the museum presents temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
Nature
Lac de Montarrouye is a French Pyrenean lake in the municipalities of Ancizan and Campan. Ancizan also forms part of the grazing area of the 4 Véziaux, where herders drive cattle, horses, and sheep to higher elevations in summer.
Cuisine
The Cidrerie d’Ancizan operates a restaurant serving cuisine from the French Southwest and regional specialities such as tapas, grilled dishes, and garbure. It sells cider throughout the year and houses a museographic area.
The ANCIZAN – Route d’Arreau bus stop is less than a 10-minute walk from the Cidrerie d’Ancizan and is served by the LANNEMEZAN–SAINT-LARY-SOULAN line.
