Nature and Trails
The route to Étang de Moulzoune reaches a ridge with a 360-degree panorama of the Pog de Montségur, the high peaks of Monts d’Olmes and Pic Saint-Barthélémy.
Étang de Moulzoune was used to raise Atlantic salmon fry for the restocking of rivers in the Garonne basin; swimming is prohibited.
The “Les Mines” hiking trail runs through the municipality of Montferrier. On the Montferrier section of the “Les Mines” trail, public passage, trail marking and vegetation maintenance along the existing trail route are authorised.
Culture and History
Montferrier developed into a castrum during the Cathar period, a fortified village centred around a fortified manor house. The historic fortifications of Montferrier were probably pierced by four gates; two of the gates still preserved today have pointed arches.
The Fangas and Porteille talc mine, also known as the Montferrier mine, was exploited more systematically from 1896 onwards; an ore-processing plant was built in the village of Montferrier.
In the area of the Fangas mine, a stone shelter for miners, a concrete platform, rusty remains of mining carts, and remnants of stone and cement walls are still visible; part of the site is fenced off following safety work carried out after the 2002 rockfall.
