Culture and History

The Église Saint-Julien d’Estavar is documented as dating from the 11th century. Visits to the church are organised through the Mairie of Estavar. The Chapelle Saint-Barthélemy de Bajande is also documented as dating from the 11th century and lies along the continuation of the Way of St James. The Chapelle St Barthélemy in Bajande also contains two collection plates from the 16th century.

The Roman road “Strata Ceretana” ran through the Estavar area. It connected Llívia with the hamlet of Caillastres in the direction of Eyne and the Têt Valley.

Trails and Landscape

The Discovery of the Springs is an easy 1.5 km walk that begins at the church of Estavar. The Sentier historique starts at the Église Sant Julien d’Estavar, crosses the Estagouge stream, which serves as a boundary, and then continues towards Llívia. In the surroundings of Estavar, this trail leads to a 380° panoramic view from the summit of the hill of Llívia, as well as to the ruins and archaeological excavations of the Château de Llívia.

PR 79 – L’Hippopotame is a 9.0 km moderately difficult circular hiking trail that takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes and begins at the Bajande station. At the start, the trail follows the Estavar irrigation canal; it also leads to a 360° panorama across the whole of Cerdagne.

Local Character

In the hamlet of Caillastres, you can buy honey from Cerdagne. Montagne Sauvage also offers modules for sylvotherapy, or forest bathing.
