Landscape and Nature
Canaveilles lies partly within the Natura 2000 site “Sites à chiroptères des Pyrénées orientales”, the special protection area FR 9102010. The peaks of Roc dels Trepassants and Roc dels Cimbells are located in the vicinity of Canaveilles. Llomet and Puig de la Segalissa are peaks in the area around Canaveilles.
Hiking
“Sur la route des canons” is a difficult 10.6-kilometre circular hike starting from Canaveilles. The circular trail includes a chapel, a signal tower and a historic path as cultural heritage features. The route offers views of the upper Têt Valley, Haut-Conflent, the Carança gorges and the high peaks along the border.
Culture
The remains of the Château de Cérola are located on a promontory above the left bank of the Têt. Sant Père d’Eixalada is considered a small Romanesque church associated with the former village near Cérola. The Canaveilles-les-Bains thermal station lies on the left bank of the Têt, around 100 metres below Route nationale 116, at an elevation of 700 metres, and has now been abandoned.
The present-day church of Saint-André de Llar dates from the late 10th or 12th century and was restored in the 2000s. Pedra Dreta is an ancient site in the wider regional surroundings of Canaveilles. The Abbaye Saint-Martin du Canigou, a monastery, is located in the surrounding area. The wider regional surroundings also include the Abbaye de Jau, now a ruin, and the Abbaye de Saint-Michel de Cuxa, a monastery. The church of Saint-Martin in Canaveilles is Romanesque in style and is mentioned in written sources as early as 1011.
