Mont-Louis: Hotels and accommodation

History

The project for the fortified new town of Mont-Louis was implemented in 1679; the fortifications were completed in 1681. Mont-Louis is one of the twelve Vauban fortifications added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.

Culture

The military citadel of Mont-Louis can be entered as part of an exclusive guided tour. The town of Mont-Louis can be visited freely. The citadel contains the Puits des Forçats, a well carved out of the rock with a depth of around 28 metres, including 11 metres of water.

The protected Four Solaire de Mont-Louis comprises the solar furnace itself, with its heliostat, concentrator and furnace; these components are located on the town's ramparts. The fixed parabolic concentrator has an area of 100 square metres and consists of 860 concave mirrors. Today, it is open to visitors.

The chapels of the Église Saint-Louis are decorated with altarpieces, frescoes and altars.

Nature

The Tour des remparts is a yellow-marked circular trail on the PR10 or PR3 that goes around Mont-Louis and takes about one hour. The Sentier des oiseaux is a yellow-marked walk of around 30 minutes on the PR10 for observing birds and listening to their song.

Getting there

Mont-Louis / La Cabanasse railway station is an SNCF station on the Train Jaune on the Villefranche-de-Conflent–Latour-de-Carol/Enveitg TER line and is located around 800 metres from Mont-Louis.
