Nature

In the immediate vicinity of Cantal are Suc Gros, Suc de la Blatte, Rocher de l'Aygue, and Puy de la Tourte, each of which is generally considered a mountain there. Puy Mary connects this mountain landscape with sweeping views over valleys, plateaus, and rocky peaks.

Activities

In the Puy Mary area, there are five mountain biking trails certified by the Fédération Française de Cyclisme, with three levels of difficulty. Guided canyoning is also offered there.

Cantal has 3,263 kilometres of publicly accessible paths. The Grande Traversée des Volcans d’Auvergne connects Chamalières with Le Lioran along a 210-kilometre route divided into eleven stages. For cyclists, the V74 Grande Traversée du Volcan à Vélo runs for 133 kilometres through the Cantal massif.

The Cantal Rando et Découverte app lists more than 650 routes. It includes hiking, mountain biking, cycling, and long-distance hiking routes and can function completely offline.

At the visitor centre at Pas de Peyrol, an audiovisual exhibition explains the formation and appearance of the Cantal volcano. From there, a path leads to the information board at Puy Mary; panoramic views and explanations by a Grand Site guide await you there.

Culture

Salers is regarded as a village with houses featuring turrets, a belfry, and fortification walls that reflect medieval and Renaissance character. Salers church contains a 15th-century Entombment with nine life-size figures, as well as historic paintings, tapestries, and statues. From the Esplanade de Barrouze, views extend over the valleys of the Maronne and the Aspre.

In the Pays de Salers, at least nine castles open to visitors lie along the Route des Châteaux in Auvergne. The programme includes guided tours, concerts, exhibitions, and theatre performances. In the surrounding area of Cantal are Château de la Cheyrelle, Château de la Borie, Château d’Apchon, and Château de Chanterelle, each of which is generally considered a castle there.

Cotteughes preserves the remains of a medieval village that was abandoned at the end of the 14th century. The site covers approximately four hectares and includes more than thirty dwellings known as “cases”.
