Saint-Jacques-des-Blats is located in the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, at an elevation of around 1,000 metres at the upper end of the Cère Valley. The village is also located within the Grand Site de France du Puy Mary. Bus and coach routes pass through Saint-Jacques-des-Blats all year round.
Hiking and Trails
Saint-Jacques-des-Blats is the starting point for several hiking trails that can be used on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. The marked hike to Plomb du Cantal is 11 kilometres long, takes five hours, starts at the hamlet of Les Gardes and is designated as a difficult out-and-back route. The marked “Les Boissines” trail is a 15.1-kilometre moderate circular route from Place de l'Église to the summit of Puy Griou.
The route to Plomb du Cantal reaches the 1,855-metre-high summit of the Cantal volcano and offers a viewpoint overlooking Puy Griou. The Boucle des hauts de Saint Jacques leads to the Bouguette viewpoint, with an orientation table and views of Plomb du Cantal, Bec de l'Aigle and Puy Griou. The route to Arpon du Diable starts at the church square in Saint-Jacques-des-Blats. The municipality also contains the “Décollage du Plomb du Cantal” sports facility, covering an area of 10,000 m².
Regional Produce and Events
The Ferme du Griou in Saint-Jacques-des-Blats processes 95% of its milk production into farm-produced AOP Cantal and other farm-produced dairy products such as Tome fraîche, fromage blanc, fromage frais à tartiner, faisselles and raw milk. During visits to the Ferme du Griou, visitors learn how Cantal is made.
The Fête de l'Estive takes place every year at the end of May in the village of Saint-Jacques-des-Blats and is associated with driving livestock to the summer pastures. The traditional Messe des Bergers has been celebrated every year in early July for 18 years on the Plateau du Puy Gros at an elevation of more than 1,500 metres.
Culture
The Saint Jacques church was restored and extended in the 19th century and is built in the neo-Gothic style. The former cemetery cross of Saint-Jacques-des-Blats dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and is made of volcanic rock. The entrance hall of the Saint Jacques church houses a permanent exhibition about the village's links with Saint-Jacques de Compostelle; it forms part of stage 4 of the Via-Arverna.
