Nature and trails

The GR 400 begins in Murat. The 140-kilometre trail runs through the uplands along the slopes of the Massif cantalien, Europe's largest volcano, and can be completed in eight days or less.

Murat is also a stage on the Via Arverna, a branch route to Santiago de Compostela connecting Clermont-Ferrand with Cahors.

From the Rocher de Bonnevie, the Chemin de Bonnevie offers panoramic views of Murat's rooftops and the Monts du Cantal at the foot of the Notre-Dame de la Haute-Auvergne statue.

Culture and history

Medieval Murat features preserved historic buildings as well as a variety of architectural styles and building materials. The Chapelle Saint-Antoine has major construction phases dating from the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries.

The Mémorial de la Déportation commemorates the 103 residents of Murat who were arrested on 24 June 1944; 75 of them died in the camps. The memorial can be visited every day throughout the year, but only by prior reservation.

The Maison de la Faune is housed in a former 16th-century subprefecture building and displays animal collections in reconstructed biotopes across four floors. It contains more than 8,000 species of insects, butterflies and beetles from around the world, as well as nearly 800 mammals and birds in reconstructed biotopes.
