Culture and History

The Issenheim Altarpiece was created between 1512 and 1516 for the Antonine commandery in Issenheim and is still on display in the chapel of the Musée Unterlinden. The history of the Order of St. Anthony is presented in the Espace muséographique du couvent des Antonins; a reduced reproduction of the Issenheim Altarpiece can also be seen there, with panels that can be opened and handled.

The present-day Saint-André parish church was built in 1826 after the former parish church was demolished in 1823 because it had become structurally unsafe. A gilded tau marks the former location of the Issenheim Altarpiece on the forecourt of the Antonine church. Visitors can admire a 19th-century Callinet organ in the Saint-André church.

The Maison Saint-Michel preserves the portal of the former Antonine monastery; vault keystones depict Saint Anthony and Saint Veronica. Its history is linked to a preceptory of the Order of St. Anthony founded in Issenheim in 1277. The town’s architectural heritage also includes the Ancienne filature Gast, with a façade section and offices in the Neo-Tudor style, as well as a rectangular production hall. Its structure of cast-iron columns supports ribbed vaults with skylights. In Issenheim, the Villa Gast is one of the villas built with large gardens by wealthy industrialists.

Issenheim lies at the outlet of the Lauch Valley, in a natural setting shaped by the Alsace Plain, the Vosges Massif and its foothills. The town is located at the foot of the lower Vosges hills, about 2 km from the vineyards and the Alsace Wine Route.

Issenheim is connected by the regional roads RD83 and RD430: RD83 links Belfort with Colmar, while RD430 connects Guebwiller with Mulhouse. The nearest railway stations are in Bollwiller and Rouffach; both are about 6 km from Issenheim.
