Hartmannswiller: Hotels and accommodations

The fortified cemetery of Hartmannswiller is one of the few remaining fortified church cemeteries in Alsace. It is classified as a historic monument and was intended to protect the population from attacks by mercenaries.

Culture and history

A structural element on the outer window of the choir of the Saint Blaise parish church bears the year 1495. The château in Hartmannswiller is also partly protected as a historic monument. The nobles of the Waldner family built it as a moated castle in 1562.

Around 1860, a Roman villa was excavated at the Schimmelrain locality in the Hartmannswiller area. The Hartmannswiller Society for Local History also established an explanatory tourist trail and founded a lapidarium museum.

Geographical location

Hartmannswiller’s local hiking offerings include a route entitled “Les tranchées sud du Hartmannswillerkopf”. In the surrounding area, the Hartmannswillerkopf is now a place of history, remembrance and nature; in the past, it was a battlefield. The footpath to the Hartmannswillerkopf can be accessed from Hartmannswiller; parking is available near the Stand de Tir on the Route de la forêt.

Food and local life

For several years, a wine and gourmet market has been held in Hartmannswiller every November, organized by RR Big Band. Winemakers from various regions of France, a craft brewer and gourmet artisans gather there to present their products.

La Cantine Zeller welcomes walkers on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. It offers hot and cold drinks and also serves soups in winter.

The Hartmannswiller soapbox race is also part of the local events calendar. It has been held annually since 1977; the 2020 edition was the exception due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
