Culture and history

Murbach Abbey was officially founded on May 13, 728, by Widegern, the Bishop of Strasbourg. The present-day Saint-Léger Abbey Church dates from the first half of the 12th century.

In 1756, the former Saint-Léger Abbey Church was converted into a parish church after the nave had been destroyed; the choir and transept were preserved. By a decree dated October 1, 1841, the former abbey church was classified as a historic monument.

The former abbey gate, with its portal and the buildings at 6, 7, and 8 Rue Principale, was listed as a historic monument by a decree dated December 30, 1985.

The Notre-Dame de Lorette Chapel was built in 1693. The Calvary along the Stations of the Cross leading to the Notre-Dame de Lorette Chapel has been restored.
