Sulíkov in South Moravia: Churches, Trails and Viewpoints

Sulíkov in the Halasovo Kunštátsko Nature Park

Sulíkov lies on the northern edge of the Halasovo Kunštátsko Nature Park. Marked local cycling routes and marked hiking trails run through Sulíkov. Marked cycling route 5085 passes through several places: Kunštát, Rudka, Sulíkov, Kněževes and Hartmanice follow in this order; the route continues in the direction of Polička. This sequence of places provides a concrete basis for planning a route or part of a route. Sulíkov lies on a connection linking several places in the surrounding area. The marked hiking trails offer a separate option for exploring the area on foot.

Churches and Historical Heritage

The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Sulíkov dates from the 13th century. The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Sulíkov is listed in the Register of Monuments of the Czech Republic. Its chancel tower is probably of early Gothic origin and is among the few exceptionally well-documented examples in Moravia.

Another distinctive feature is the Chapel of Saint Monica and Saint Augustine. The chapel’s floor plan is shaped like a tear and symbolises the tears of Saint Monica for her son, Saint Augustine. The Chapel of Saint Monica and Saint Augustine was consecrated on 30 August 1998. The 13th-century church and the chapel consecrated in 1998 therefore date from distinctly different periods.

Vřesice had extensive pottery production; the craft of pottery reached its peak in the 1930s and 1940s. Alongside the religious buildings, pottery production thus represents another specific aspect of the village’s history.

Viewpoints and Landscape

Vřesice lies in the Halasovo Kunštátsko Nature Park and in the protected zone of the Křetínka Reservoir. Povětrňák Hill above Vřesice offers views of the Boskovice Furrow, the Drahany Highlands and the Křetínka Reservoir. A windmill once stood on Povětrňák Hill. The former site of the windmill adds a historical landscape element to the viewpoint hill.

Brablec Hill offers a view across the entire Křetínka Valley. Šibeník Hill rises north-west of Sulíkov; from its summit, the view extends across the wider surrounding area. The two hills differ in that Brablec offers a view of the valley, while Šibeník provides a broader view of the surrounding area. Under suitable climatic conditions, numerous mushrooms and blueberries grow in the surrounding forests.

Attractions in the Surrounding Area

In the surrounding area, Kunštát Castle offers accessible interior rooms showing the domestic culture of the last noble owners and the oldest parts of the original castle. Also nearby is the Cave of the Blanice Knights in Rudka, with sculptures by sculptor Stanislav Rolínek; its surroundings are laid out like a park. The two attractions therefore focus on interiors and castle areas on the one hand, and sculptures and a park-like outdoor setting on the other.

In Vřesice, a fire pond is used as a swimming pool during the summer months. Other places you can include in your travel plans are Vlkov, Ústup, Křetín, Kunštát, Vranová, Kněževes, Rozsíčka and Olešnice Na Moravě.
