The Strážný ski area has three drag lifts directly in Strážný. Facilities include groomed downhill slopes with artificial snowmaking and groomed cross-country ski trails. The Šumava Ski Highway, which connects Železná Ruda with Zadní Zvonková, also passes through Strážný.
Geographical setting
The Strážný settlement enclave emerged on the Vimperk branch of the Golden Trail near the border with Germany. The border of Šumava National Park runs through the settlement enclave; its northeastern part lies outside the park.
Culture and history
On Obecní vrch south of Strážný lies an almost one-kilometre-long system of remains of the Vimperk branch of the Golden Trail. It is considered one of the best-preserved remnants of the Golden Trail.
The earthfill dam of Weiher Pond was built by Petr Malovec between 1543 and 1547. It is considered the oldest earthfill dam in Central Europe and dates from the 15th to the 16th century.
The Kunžvart Castle ruins are a border castle on the eastern spur of Mount Strážný, approximately 1.5 km from the municipality of Strážný. At an elevation of 1,033 m, Kunžvart is one of the highest-altitude castles in the Czech Republic. The royal guard castle was built near the national border to protect the Golden Trail.
A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from the Kunžvart Castle ruins to the former Orlova Huť and to a viewpoint dedicated to Václav Hrubý. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1834, also stands on Kamenný vrch northwest of and above Strážný.
