Nature and Knowledge

The Puštíkova Trail features interactive educational stations about forest life, forest regeneration and the importance of dead wood. It begins about 1 km from the information centre, is 1.6 km long and forms part of a 4.5 km circular route that leads back to Stožec. On the Puštíkova Trail, visitors learn about forest animals and plants, play “track finders”, explore tree bark and try an activity about woodpeckers.

The Stožec Information Centre presents the forest communities of Šumava National Park, its ecosystems and typical representatives of its animal and plant life, as well as the development of the forests, in its exhibition.

Exploring Stožec

A hiking route reaches Stožecká skála via Stožecká kaple; the chapel is situated at an altitude of 950 metres and the rock at 974 metres, with the rock reached at the sixth kilometre. On the cycling route, a turn-off to Stožecká kaple and Stožecká skála begins 1.5 km after the junction. The climb is too steep for cycling, so bicycles must be left behind.

Near the tunnel, the route turns onto Medvědí cesta and returns to Stožec via Rudolfova cesta, Hučice, the Krejčová Trail and the U jelena junction on Tovární cesta. A route described as very demanding leads from Stožec via Bonarova cesta to the Schwarzenberg Floating Canal and onwards towards Jelení Vrchy. A described 11.5 km circular hike returns to the TIM Stožec signpost at Stožec railway station.

Water and Crafts

The Lesní dílna at SEV Stožec has an indoor, wheelchair-accessible area for craft activities, discussions and lectures. The outdoor area offers a terrace and a wooden footbridge with views of the Studená Vltava and its surroundings.

Wild swimming is possible in the Studená Vltava in Stožec. The weir that dams the water for the waterworks is considered the best spot for cooling off and swimming.

The so-called Vltava Path initially follows the course of the Studená Vltava and, from Smolná Pec onwards, the course of the Vltava to its confluence with the Teplá Vltava in Nová Pec at the beginning of the Lipno Reservoir, the so-called “Czech Sea”. At 16 km, it is the longest inline skating route in Bohemia.

Local History

In 1791, a wooden chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built above a healing-water spring at an altitude of 950 metres. Stožec was founded in the 18th century as a logging settlement on the western slope above the right bank of the Studená Vltava.
