Culture and History

Litomyšl Castle has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999. The building is a Renaissance arcaded residence influenced by Italian architectural models. The castle preserves an 18th-century theatre with original painted decoration, stage sets and stage machinery. The brewery next to the castle is the birthplace of composer Bedřich Smetana. Litomyšl Castle was built for Vratislav of Pernštejn between 1568 and 1581 by Giovanni Battista and Ulrico Aostalli.
