Rudná pod Pradědem combines its location in the foothills of the Jeseníky Mountains with a specifically named winter offering: the Nová Rudná–Ranná cross-country skiing route is 2.3 km long and has an ascent of 83 m and a descent of 14 m. At the same time, the town is connected with the main tourism, recreation and ski centres in the vicinity of Praděd.
Nature
The northern and western parts of Nová Rudná lie within the Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area. This protected landscape area is home to numerous protected plant and animal species, including critically endangered species. Original sycamore maple and beech stands grow on the slopes of a 782-metre-high elevation.
Local Character
Nová Rudná is exclusively focused on recreation. Stará Rudná, by contrast, has the character of a rural settlement with a pronounced residential and commercial-agricultural function.
History
The village was founded after gold was discovered in the Černý potok stream and a gold-washing site was established. Gold was mined in Stará Rudná from 1671 to 1742; the towns of Andělská Hora, Bruntál and Vrbno were involved in this activity. The popular name “hornický výval” for the oldest part of the settlement on the Černý potok is considered evidence of early mining activity.
Culture
The Church of Saint John the Baptist stands in Stará Rudná and is a defining landmark of the municipality of Rudná pod Pradědem. The church dates from 1655; original wall paintings have been preserved inside. In the centre of Rudná pod Pradědem there is also a Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, made in 1744.
