Brauntal is home to Zámek Bruntál, a Renaissance château rebuilt at the end of the 16th century from an originally late Gothic castle on the town walls. Its ground plan forms a segment of a circle; the complex includes arcades in the courtyard and a clock tower.

Culture and history

The most valuable interiors of Zámek Bruntál are open to the public. They include a chapel on the ground floor, as well as rooms on the first floor with Rococo wall paintings and original furnishings. In the oldest part of the château, the so-called Old Palace from the early 16th century, two permanent museum exhibitions can be seen: “Příroda Bruntálska” and “Řemeslo má zlaté dno – řemesla a živnosti bruntálského regionu”.

The natural history collection of Muzeum v Bruntále includes geology, botany, zoology and entomology. The museum can be reached on foot, by bicycle, car, bus and train.

The château park of Zámek Bruntál contains remnants of the former town walls of Bruntál, a bastion, a ground-level Sala terrena and 11 sculptures. It covers 2.5 hectares, is used for concerts and has a year-round inline skating circuit.

The parish church Farní kostel is the oldest stone building in Bruntál. Since September 2024, its observation tower has offered views of Bruntál and its surroundings.

The Piarist monastery in Bruntál was the largest Baroque-era building in the town. It contributed to the town’s cultural development; the grammar school housed there laid the foundation for the local theatre scene. The civic building Gabrielův dům served as the town museum in the 1950s.

Nature

Uhlířský vrch is considered the youngest extinct volcano in the Czech Republic. Uhlířský vrch is protected as a natural monument and covers 4.7 hectares; a new educational trail leads through the protected area.
