The Městské muzeum presents visitors with the older and more recent history of Chrastava and its surrounding area. The museum includes a mini-gallery with regularly changing exhibitions. At Chrastavské sklepení, the past of Chrastava is also presented in a hand-painted exhibition featuring local legends.
Culture and History
The Vodní náhon water canal and the associated area of the old mill were designated immovable monuments in 2013. In 2021, a new visitor exhibition was established in the former area of an old mill at the Vodní náhon site. The site is freely accessible; visitors can obtain the key at the information centre in exchange for a deposit of CZK 100.
The Muzeum historické hasičské techniky displays hand-operated and motorized fire pumps. Its collection includes a wooden fire pump dating from 1778. The museum is located on Bílokostelecká Street in T. G. Masaryk Park and is considered the second-largest museum of its kind in the Czech Republic.
Führichův dům was built in 1802 and is a state-protected half-timbered monument. The second floor houses a small museum about the life and work of Josef Führich.
Buildings and Squares
The Church of St. Lawrence is a Neo-Gothic building on a low hill above Chrastava. Its interior contains an original organ. The town's collection of technical monuments also includes an Art Nouveau metal bridge over the Jeřice, which is a state-protected technical monument.
At the centre of the square stands a Baroque sandstone fountain dating from 1707. A Baroque Marian column, also called a plague column, dating from 1732 is located near the square.
Surroundings
In the immediate vicinity of Chrastava, a hand-operated transborder ferry crosses the Lusatian Neisse and is accessible there year-round. In the immediate vicinity, Výhledy has a birdwatching lookout point.
In the immediate vicinity of Chrastava, the enclosing wall, the remains of two towers, and the walls of the residential building are still preserved at Hamrštejn. The ruins of Hamrštejn Castle are also located nearby, 200 metres uphill along a forest path from Machnín Hrad railway station. The cycle route from Chrastava to Kryštofovo Údolí follows cycle routes 14, 20 and 21 to the area below the ruins of Hamrštejn Castle.
Cycling and Hiking Trails
The “PROJÍŽĎKA po památkách CHRASTAVY” cycling tour is an easy bike ride just under 8 km long. The cycle route from Chrastava to Kryštofovo Údolí is 9 km long, or 21 km as a circular route returning to Chrastava. The third stage of the Stezka Českem in the Liberec area begins at Chrastava railway station.
