A specific ski resort, particular slopes or lifts, and information about snow reliability and ability levels are not part of Radimovice’s local profile. Instead, the town is characterized by its historic buildings, community events, and the natural surroundings along the Mohelka.
Culture and Historic Buildings
The railway tunnel beneath Radimovice on the line between Pardubice and Liberec was excavated between 1856 and 1858 and is 676 metres long. The Sychrovský Viaduct is 120 metres long and 11.5 metres wide. It lies in the cadastral area of the municipality of Radimovice and rises 32 metres above the Mohelka Valley.
Historic sculptures include the sandstone statues of Saint Lawrence, Saint John of Nepomuk, and Saint Florian from the 18th and 19th centuries. The statue of Saint Barbara stands on a hilltop overlooking Radimovice and the surrounding landscape. The state-owned Sychrov Chateau is also located in the immediate vicinity of Radimovice. Vila Zelenka was built in its surroundings as the first recreational or holiday home and served this purpose there in the following years.
The Masopust carnival in Radimovice is the municipality’s largest cultural event and includes a masked procession. Visitors can take part in a competition for the best carnival doughnuts and sample traditional carnival specialities. The Sychrovská Pilgrimage has been documented since the 19th century and has taken place on the first Sunday in September since 1920; market stalls and fairground rides extend along Radimovice’s main street.
Nature along the Mohelka
The middle course of the Mohelka is a transitional section between a mountain river and a lowland river; this section is known as the “grayling zone”. Brown trout, grayling, and bullhead are found there. Kingfishers, grey wagtails, and white-throated dippers are relatively common along the grayling zone. More than 150 bird species have been recorded in Radimovice.
Below the summit of Hrobka lies a body of water measuring approximately two hectares, referred to as “Světský rybník” on some maps. It has no inflow and is fed exclusively by rain and snowfall. Mallards, coots, the non-native Egyptian goose, and reed warblers regularly breed at this body of water.
Relatively well-preserved beech stands can be found on the steep northern slopes above the Mohelka. In early spring, a visible spring aspect with flowering understorey plants can be observed in the remnants of beech stands on the steep slopes around the Mohelka.
Getting Around Radimovice
Sychrov railway halt is 10 to 15 minutes uphill on foot from the centre of Radimovice. Several cycling routes pass through Radimovice or around the municipality.
