History

The name Žďárek is derived from the old term “žďářit,” which refers to burning or clearing land for a grain field. The first written references to Žďárek date from 1600.

A historic road to Upper Lusatia ran through Žďárek. This road was used by the Russian army during the campaign against Napoleon and by the Prussian army in 1866. From 1939 to 1945, the border of the Protectorate ran through Žďárek.

Landscape and Transport

At 488 metres above sea level, the “Hrobka” elevation is the highest point in Žďárek. The riverbed of the Mohelka stream, at 342 metres above sea level, is the lowest point in Žďárek.

A railway has run through the cadastral area of Žďárek since 1859. Since 1997, the I/35 road intended for motor vehicles has also run through the area. Žďárek is suitable as a starting point for cycling tours along the Mohelka.

Culture and Townscape

The chapel in Žďárek is a late Classicist building with Neo-Gothic elements dating from the end of the 19th century. The Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius was built in 1872 and stands in the centre of Žďárek. The historic house in Žďárek is a small, L-shaped rural farmstead with a residential section built in timber construction.
