Temny Dul: Trails, Aichelburg and Chapel of Saint Anne

Temný Důl offers two differently long route measurements for planning a day trip. The Way of the Cross to Stará hora leads from the road to a spring over 680 metres and overcomes an elevation gain of 120 metres. The Aichelburg walking route is 8.2 kilometres long. The comparison is therefore between a shorter route with a stated ascent and a longer route. For the Way of the Cross and the Aichelburg route, you can therefore base your planning on different measurements: the ascent for the first and the total length for the second.

Trails and marked routes

During the excursion, the route continues along a green-marked hiking trail. This is also designated as the marked cycling route K 25. The Aichelburg trail was extended in 2009 via the settlement of Honzův Potok. Those planning this route can therefore follow the green hiking-trail marking and the K 25 designation.

Aichelburg and the castle hall

The reconstructed small castle of Aichelburg stands on a rocky promontory high above Temný Důl. Lesní hrádek Aichelburg was ceremonially opened on 9 September 1863. A bust of Count Berthold was placed in the stone castle hall. The bust was made after a painting by F. Hauptfleisch. F. Hauptfleisch was a modeller from the glassworks in Temný Důl.

Chapel of Saint Anne

In 1752, Johann Bensch and his wife built the Chapel of Saint Anne. The masonry chapel has a pyramid-shaped roof crowned by a bell tower. The building structure, roof and attached bell tower form a unified architectural ensemble. The Chapel of Saint Anne is considered one of the oldest religious buildings in the eastern Krkonoše region.

Dixova brusírna dřeva

The former Dixova brusírna dřeva in Temný Důl has been a protected cultural monument since 1996. The building is a three-wing industrial complex on the Úpa River. An octagonal chimney and a former water intake are among its architectural features. Unlike the Chapel of Saint Anne, this is an industrial complex; the two buildings therefore represent different historical forms in Temný Důl.

Information centre and practical orientation

At the Veselý výlet Information Centre in Temný Důl or in Pec pod Sněžkou, visitors can borrow keys to Lesní hrádek Aichelburg and use them to open the castle hall themselves. To open the castle hall independently, one of these two information centres is therefore the first point of contact. Parking is available at the Veselý Výlet Information Centre in Temný Důl; the excursion to the Way of the Cross begins there. For the Way of the Cross, this provides a starting point with parking at the information centre.
