Liberk is home to the wooden Church of St Peter and St Paul, a unique testament to folk art. Its church ensemble includes a tiered wooden bell tower and a log-built vicarage. The church has a Baroque interior with coffered ceilings; the inside of the church features paintings on wood.

Culture

Commented tours of the Church of St Peter and St Paul are available by prior arrangement. There are no regular opening hours, so tours must be arranged in advance. Public events are regularly held in the church. Since 2014, the entire church ensemble has been a national cultural monument.

The local sculptor Filip Jakub Prokop is also part of Liberk’s history: he was born in Liberk in 1740. He is commemorated by a plaque attached to the local nursery school. The Church of St Peter and St Paul contains wooden statues of Saint Wenceslas and Saint John of Nepomuk created by Filip Jakub Prokop.

History

The remains of Rychmberk Castle lie on a spur above the Liberský potok stream on the western edge of the municipality of Liberk. The core of the site was separated from the surrounding terrain by a neck ditch approximately 25 metres wide and around 6.5 metres deep. A well carved into the rock has survived in the former outer bailey. A clearly recognisable path still leads to the castle along the southern slope of the hill.

Liberk Castle is an important archaeological site. Local tradition also includes the Liberk skeleton figure, which is explained by two local legends. One Liberk legend tells of a cruel burgrave who was buried in an old crypt in front of the church altar.

Churches and Sculptures

The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk in Liberk is a small rural church with a wooden bell tower and was built between 1734 and 1736. The village is also home to a column with a statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, erected in 1751 at the expense of the municipality.

The Ecce Homo statue in Liberk was probably created in Vienna in 1777. It is an early regional example of Neoclassical art of Viennese provenance. The statue of Our Lady of Wambierzyce also dates from 1777. It reflects the veneration of the Marian pilgrimage site of Wambierzyce in Kłodzko.

Fragments of a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, acquired at the expense of the municipality in 1777, have also survived in Liberk. The front of the pedestal features a remarkable view of the village. A sandstone crucifix dating from 1834 stands at the entrance to the church precinct. There is also the masonry rural Chapel of the Coronation of Mary, dating from around the mid-18th century.

The architectural heritage also includes a preserved rural farmstead ensemble characteristic of the Rychnov region.

Landscape and Trails

A blue-marked hiking trail leads downhill from Liberk into the valley of the Liberský potok stream. The trail passes through quiet sections of forest and is accompanied by the gentle murmur of a stream.
