Kufstein combines the fortress town of Kufstein with eight surrounding villages. This gives you a wide range of options for your stay, from mountain landscapes, easy and more challenging hiking opportunities, historic architecture and traditional crafts to special experiences.
Nature between the Kaiser Mountains and Hechtsee
The Kaiser Mountains nature reserve lies east of Kufstein. It extends directly from Kufstein across a wide mountain range and thus shapes the region's natural landscape. The Scheffauer mountain and the Petersköpfl peak are also located in the vicinity of Kufstein.
More than 1,000 kilometres of hiking trails are available in the Kaiser Mountains nature experience area. These include alpine paths, pleasant trails and challenging routes. In addition, free guided experience tours with expert guides are offered in the Kaiser Mountains.
The circular trail around Hechtsee is an easy, 2.7-kilometre hike starting and ending at the Hechtsee car park. It runs directly along the water and offers views of the Kaiser Mountains.
The Kufstein nature experience trail is an interactive themed trail with 14 stations. It leads from the Duxer Alm middle station to the Marienkapelle chapel on the Duxer Köpfl.
The Kaiserlift Kufstein provides access to the Brentenjoch mountain station at an altitude of around 1,256 metres; the ride takes approximately 30 minutes.
Fortress, old town and history
Kufstein Fortress is a castle in the vicinity of Kufstein. It was first mentioned in official documents in 1205. In 1504, Emperor Maximilian I conquered the fortress from the Bavarians.
The fortress is home to the museum in the state prison. It displays a cell block on the fourth floor of the Kaiserturm tower with 13 cells. The state prison existed during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and housed mostly political prisoners.
Another distinctive cultural experience is the Heroes' Organ. It plays daily at 12:00 noon and has 4,948 pipes. In the old town, Römerhofgasse is also one of Kufstein's attractions.
The fortress can also be incorporated into a culinary experience: upon advance reservation, it offers a castle lord's feast as a culinary and entertaining experience.
Glass craftsmanship and insights into production
