If you’re looking for a hotel in Niederau, it helps to start by thinking about how you’d like to spend your days: at Markbachjoch with views of the mountain landscape, on trails and toboggan runs, or exploring local history and seasonal offerings. Each option has a different focus.

Markbachjoch, winter hiking and tobogganing

Markbachjoch is at an altitude of 1,500 metres. From there, you can enjoy views of the Wildschönau valley, the rugged mountains of the Wilder Kaiser and the Rofan Mountains. The Markbachjochbahn 8-person gondola takes you to the Markbachjoch hiking area. The altitude, views and destination of the lift offer different points of reference for a visit to the mountain.

A moderately difficult winter hike leads from Markbachjoch to Niederau and starts at the top station of the Markbachjochbahn. The Wildschönauer Höhenweg also starts at this top station. Knowing that both routes share a starting point is useful for orientation; Niederau is the destination of the winter hike. This makes it easy to distinguish the routes by their names and the waypoints listed for each.

The Lanerköpfl toboggan run starts at the top station of the Lanerköpflbahn and runs for five kilometres to Niederau, passing the Gseng and Lahner alpine huts along the way. Its starting point, length, the two huts and destination make for a clearly defined route. This gives you a different kind of winter activity to choose from alongside the hiking trails.

The Auenweg in Niederau is a walking path about one kilometre long, with a walking time of around 30 minutes. Unlike the five-kilometre toboggan run, it is a walking path; the distance and walking time describe different activities and are not a direct difficulty scale. The GroĂźe Niederau Runde is rated as an easy route, while the winter hike from Markbachjoch is rated as moderately difficult. This lets you compare a short walk, a route classified as easy, the moderately difficult winter hike and a toboggan run.

Local history and seasonal experiences

A small Gothic church already stood in Niederau in 1409; it later became the parish church of Niederau. Around 1740, the church was remodelled in the Baroque style. These two dates chart its development from an early church building to its later Baroque design, providing a specific point of interest for a stay focused on local history.

A seasonal culinary highlight is the cheese tour at the Holzalm Käsealm: in summer, the tours offer an insight into the traditional production of cheese specialities. Fresh alpine milk, alpine cheese and a snack are also available there. If you’d like to include the tour in your plans, keep the summer season in mind.

The traditional solstice bonfire at Markbachjoch in Niederau is a regular feature of the Wildschönau mountain summer. If you’d like to plan your stay around this event, check the event date in advance. The Wildschönau paragliding school is based in Niederau and offers paragliding courses and flights.
