Kufstein: Fortress, Mountain Ride and Trails
Accommodation in Kufstein
Kufstein combines fortress history, cultural attractions, a mountain ride to Brentenjoch and trails around Lake Hechtsee. The destinations have different starting points and, in some cases, seasonal conditions.
Fortress and cultural attractions
Kufstein Fortress was first mentioned in official records in 1205. The Heroes’ Organ concert is included in the fortress admission price. As admission conditions may change, check the latest information before your visit.
The Theater im Kultur Quartier Kufstein has 175 seats and accessible seats on the ground floor. The information about accessible seats refers to the ground floor. At the Madersperger Sewing Machine Museum in Kufstein, an audiovisual presentation tells the story of Josef Georg Madersperger’s life and work. The RIEDEL Museum is divided into three sections.
Mountain ride and scenery
Near Kufstein, the Kaisergebirge nature reserve extends right up to the town. This adds a distinct scenic highlight alongside the cultural attractions. The Kaiserlift takes you from Kufstein to the Brentenjoch mountain station at an elevation of 1,256 metres. The ride takes 30 minutes. As seasonal operations may change, check the operating hours for your travel date. The ride duration is a useful point of reference when planning your time: the 30 minutes refer to the journey to the mountain station, not the entire outing. Allow additional time for your stay at Brentenjoch.
There is also a return trip on the panoramic cable car at Kufstein Fortress. Check the latest ticket information before your visit.
Nature trails and Lake Hechtsee
The family-friendly Kufstein Nature Experience Trail starts at the Kaiserlift’s middle station, by the Duxer Alm. Its starting point therefore differs from those of the two circular trails: the easy circular trail to Thierberg Chapel starts and ends at Unterer Stadtplatz in Kufstein and is 6.6 kilometres long. Thierberg Chapel itself is a small pilgrimage chapel perched above the valley.
For a shorter outing, try the easy circular trail around Lake Hechtsee: it is 2.7 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Hechtsee car park. When planning, compare both the trail lengths and the stated start and end points. This gives you two options of different lengths: a shorter loop at Lake Hechtsee and a longer trail to Thierberg Chapel.
During the bathing season, leisure bus route 50 connects Kufstein with Lake Hechtsee eight times a day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. It runs daily during the summer holidays. The bus connection and the circular trail address different planning needs: the bus connects Kufstein with the lake, while the trail starts and ends at the Hechtsee car park. Check the timetable for your travel date, as the bus runs seasonally.
