Auffach – Ski holidays between Schatzberg and regional experiences

Auffach combines access to the ski area with mountain and cultural experiences. The Schatzberg cable car leads directly from the village centre to the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau. The ride to Schatzberg takes just under 15 minutes, and the mountain station is located at an altitude of over 1,770 metres.

Days in the mountains on Schatzberg

Schatzberg is not only a destination for winter sports, but also offers a range of activities in the mountains. The Schatzberg Family Trail, suitable for prams, leads from the mountain station via the middle station to Auffach. Those looking for a shorter mountain hike can take the easy Schatzberg circular trail to the reservoir pond above Gernalm. From the Schatzberg Cross, there are views of the surrounding mountains of Wildschönau and the Alpbachtal valley.

The Koglmoos water playground is also located in the mountain area. The Seefeldalm in Auffach lies at an altitude of 1,979 metres and is the highest alpine pasture in Wildschönau. Schatzberg is also a worthwhile destination for mountain bikers. The Wildschönau mountain railways were awarded the Tyrolean Toboggan Run Quality Seal as part of the Luge World Cup in Innsbruck/Igls. Which of these options suits your stay therefore depends on whether you want to experience the mountain exclusively via the cable car and ski area or also plan to explore trails and enjoy other activities.

Wood, history and local culture

The 1st Tyrolean Wood Museum is located in the centre of Auffach. It extends over more than 2,000 m², comprises 39 interactive rooms and displays more than 3,000 wooden exhibits. The Holzweg trail begins in Auffach behind the Wood Museum, on the left after the wooden bridge, and leads as a circular trail to fourteen stations. There, visitors can learn about wood.

The Holzweg trail also commemorates the former transportation of timber by water. Timber was collected in the Ache river and transported by water power through the Kundler Klamm gorge into the Inn Valley. This also makes the circular trail interesting for visitors who want to get to know the village beyond its present-day mountain railway connections.

Chapels and regional specialities

Two different religious sites are also part of the local orientation. The Steiner Chapel at the foot of Schatzberg is dedicated to the Visitation of Mary and is a pilgrimage site. The Schönanger Chapel was consecrated in September 2014 on a small hill at Schönanger in Auffach. The two chapels are therefore located at different points: one is at the foot of Schatzberg, while the other is on a small hill at Schönanger.

At the Schönangeralm show dairy, visitors can gain insights into cheese production during guided tours and sample the result. During guided tours of the herb garden, Birgit presents medicinal herbs, ointments and teas. This makes it possible to combine a stay in Auffach with regional culinary experiences without placing the village’s connection to winter sports at the centre of every activity.
