Winter Sports Terms Explained
Winter sports information uses specialist words for terrain, lifts, snow, equipment and safety. This short glossary helps readers compare resort pages and plan a ski day.
Terrain and piste terms
A piste is a marked run prepared for skiing. A beginner area usually offers easier terrain and instruction, while a sector describes part of a larger resort. Snow and surface terms

Lifts and the ski day
A chairlift, gondola, drag lift and surface lift move visitors uphill in different ways. A lift connection links sectors, while a return route brings skiers back to the base. Check opening times, wind exposure, queues and the last connection before crossing a large area.
Planning and safety language
A resort status page may describe open lifts, open pistes, visibility, wind, road access or a temporary closure. Does a blue or easy piste feel the same everywhere?
No. Grading systems and local terrain differ, so check the resort map and ask the ski school when unsure.
What is the difference between a lift and a connection?
The lift moves people uphill; a connection describes how sectors or routes are linked within the area.
Does groomed mean risk-free?
No. Surface preparation does not remove weather, traffic, terrain or personal safety considerations.
