San Millán de la Cogolla: Suso, Yuso and the Cárdenas Valley

San Millán de la Cogolla lies in the valley of the Cárdenas River. The Monastery of Suso is one of the two monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla that were declared a World Heritage Site in 1997.

Culture and History

The Monastery of Suso comprises a series of caves used by former hermits, a church and an entrance hall, or narthex. On the lower-lying grounds below the Monastery of Suso, King García Sánchez of Nájera ordered the construction of the Monastery of Yuso in 1503. The upper floor of the Monastery of Yuso houses the monastery museum.

The Cueva del Santo is a temple carved into the rock that, according to tradition, was the place where San Millán lived as a hermit for forty years. The Ermita de Santa Potamia is associated with Santa Potamia, who is traditionally regarded as a direct disciple of San Millán and who recounted his life story to Saint Braulio.

The penitential procession of San Millán still takes place on the third Sunday in June and is attended exclusively by men.

Trails and Nature

The Ruta Verde del Valle de la Lengua gives hikers access to the Cárdenas Valley, with the monasteries of Yuso and Suso, via a comfortable, peaceful route. The path to the Cueva del Santo passes through a landscape characterized by beech trees, holm oaks, maples and ash trees.

The Mirador Valle del Cárdenas is located in a protected area inhabited by numerous bird species as well as wild boar, foxes, red deer and roe deer. At the viewpoint, the landscapes characterized by holm oaks and beech trees are explained, and information about the area's flora and fauna is provided.

Workshops and Museums

At the “Scriptorium. Bookmaking in the Middle Ages” workshop, participants can create a medieval initial using natural materials or copy early Spanish texts from Codex 60 in contemporary calligraphy.

The Emilianensis program offers families activities for discovering the cultural and natural heritage of the monasteries of Suso and Yuso.

The Museo Fábrica de Harinas La Gloria offers a guided tour through the museum's various levels, showing how wheat was processed into flour and displaying the original machinery. The museum is located on the site of one of the seven mills belonging to the Benedictine monks of the Monastery of Yuso; one of these mills was converted into a grain mill in 1902.
