Culture and History

Béjar is designated as a Historic Site. The surviving medieval walls of Béjar date from the 12th or 13th century. You can walk along the surviving section of the Murallas medievales via the parapet walk. The medieval walls offer views of the Sierra and Béjar’s historic ensemble.

The Palacio Ducal de Béjar was built in the 16th century at the behest of the lords of Zúñiga. The Renaissance villa El Bosque de Béjar was created in 1567 by the Duke of Béjar. If you view buildings in terms of their historical context, different periods and types of buildings stand side by side here.

Museums and Interpretation

The Museo Judío David Melul is located in a manor house dating from the mid or late 15th century, within a monumental ensemble. Its first floor presents the history of Jews in Spain, including their presence in Béjar and the surrounding area. The Museo Mateo Hernández contains more than 50 works covering animal sculpture, portraits and human figures.

The Torreón de las Cadenas houses a Cámara Oscura, which presents a bird’s-eye view of the history and architecture of Béjar. The lower part of the Torreón de las Cadenas houses the Centro de Interpretación del Patrimonio Cultural y Arqueológico. If you organise museum visits by theme, history and sculpture are available as distinct focal points.

Riverside and Countryside Trails

The Ruta de las fábricas textiles runs along the banks of the Río Cuerpo de Hombre within the municipality of Béjar. The riverside trail is four kilometres long, including the return journey, and is equipped with information panels. The Béjar–El Castañar route passes gardens, open water channels, a stone Stations of the Cross and fountains, ending at the Mirador de la Virgen.

The Béjar–El Castañar route is two kilometres long and takes approximately 35 minutes. The Béjar–Candelario route via La Canaleja begins at the Oficina Municipal de Turismo de Béjar and passes through chestnut and oak forests to Candelario. Different route lengths, an approximate time estimate and various landscape features provide several factual points of comparison when planning your day.
