Landscape

The Mirador de Betlan offers views of the villages of Terçon de Marcatosa. The elevated position above the right bank of the Garonne and the view of the surrounding villages give the landscape of Betlan different spatial perspectives.

Village Centre and History

The few houses of Betlan are grouped around a large square, which is closed off to the west by the parish church. This church is dedicated to Sant Pèir and dates back to the 11th century.

Architecture

The Església de Sant Pere (Sant Pèir) in Betlan has a nave covered by a barrel vault and a semicircular apse. At Casa Pishon, the original wooden door has been preserved, although it is damaged. The Antiga escola in Betlan is a rectangular building made of exposed irregular stone with a four-sided slate roof.

A nave is the main longitudinally oriented space of a church; the apse forms the end of the church interior. These terms therefore describe not only the external form, but also help to understand the layout of the Església de Sant Pere more precisely. In the Antiga escola, by contrast, the visible stone surface directly indicates the building material used.

Paths and Views

The Camin Reiau follows historic paths that once connected the villages of Val d’Aran and were already used by the Romans in antiquity. From Vielha, Betlan can be reached on the Camin Reiau in the direction of France.

The name Camin Reiau therefore refers to a historic route connection and not to a single road in today’s village landscape. The stated direction from Vielha to Betlan situates the described section within Val d’Aran. Together with the Mirador, this places both the route and the view of the villages at the centre.

Culture

At the entrance to Betlan, a roadside marker points to the cave associated with the local legend of the giant Mandronius. Betlan celebrates its Festa Major on 5 August.

Getting There

Betlan can be reached via the N-230; near Aubèrt, an approximately 1.5 km-long paved track branches off and leads into the village. The N-230, the turn-off near Aubèrt and the paved access road to Betlan are therefore the key points for the journey.
