Arròs in the Val d’Aran: Trails, Churches and Historical Traces

At the entrance to Arròs, a mountain track begins that leads through the Val de Varradòs to the Saut deth Pish waterfall. Access to Saut deth Pish is via an easily walkable forest track that climbs through the Val de Varradòs to the Plan des Artiguetes. Sant Joan d'Arròs can be reached via the forest track leading to Barradòs.

Trails and Landscape

The trails in the Val de Varradòs and the peaks in the immediate surroundings of Arrós form distinct landscape references. The Tuc de Sacauva, Penha Blanca, Montanha d'Uishèra and Pico de la Entecada are located near Arrós. A named trail through the valley, the Saut deth Pish waterfall and several peaks stand alongside one another as independent landmarks.

Culture

Sant Joan d’Arròs e Vila is a sanctuary of the villages of Arròs and Vila and is located above the Val de Varradòs valley. The original Romanesque building has a single-nave layout with a barrel vault, as well as a semicircular apse with Lombard blind arcades and a sawtooth frieze. Sant Joan d'Arròs is a Romanesque building from the 12th century that was later altered. It is located in an uninhabited, wooded setting.

The Arxiu Generau d'Aran is housed in Çò d’Ademà, also known as Casa deth Senhor d’Arròs. Casa Ademar or Casa del Senyor d'Arròs was built in 1820. In addition to the sanctuary, a historic building and its present-day name are also part of the traditional local references.

The GLÈISA DE SANTA EULÀLIA has an octagonal bell tower with an almost flat roof, described in the Val d'Aran as the “only example”. The Església de Santa Eulàlia is a single-nave building from the 14th century that was later extended with side chapels. The Església de Santa Eulàlia contains a Romanesque baptismal font with botanical decorative elements.

The Esglesia de Sant Esteve de Ginast is a church in the wider regional surroundings of Arrós. The Pilaret de Sant Urbà church is located in the wider regional surroundings of Arrós. The Pont d'Arròs is an old bridge on the Camin Reiau over the Garonne River; its origins probably date back to the 13th century.

History

The Trinxeres de la Tor des Tres Pois comprise trenches and machine-gun nests that were used to monitor the route to France after the Spanish Civil War. They played a significant role during the Maquis invasion attempt in the Val d'Aran in 1944. The historical connection thus extends from the structural traces of the fortifications to their use in a clearly defined contemporary historical context.
