Culture
The Museum of the Southern Railway in the Franz-Josef Railway Office in Šentjur displays extensive archival material and railway installations dating from 1844 onwards. The “Rifnik and Its Treasures” exhibition presents more than 650 archaeological objects in an exhibition space of 185 m².
The Rifnik Archaeological Park is located at the site of the largest Late Antique settlement in Slovenia. The park is open year-round and displays the foundations of two early Christian churches, seven houses, fortifications with watchtowers, a well or water reservoir, and a reconstructed prehistoric house.
The historic market centre of Zgornji trg was first mentioned around 1340 as a settlement around the Church of St George. It was restored and declared Slovenia’s most beautiful market centre in 2015. Zgornji trg also includes a chestnut park with sensory play equipment.
Ipavčeva hiša is now a museum and a protocol property of the municipality. Its interior is designed in the spirit of the 19th century, with artefacts from that period. The restored birthplace of Anton Martin Slomšek can be visited by visitors year-round. Ponikva is home to the parish church of St Martin, a Baroque church built between 1732 and 1758, consecrated two years later, and belonging to the church type of Sladka Gora.
