In Laško, Aškerc Homestead at Senožete houses a literary and ethnological collection about the poet Anton Aškerc. The estate includes a more than 500-year-old building, a thatched granary and a toplar hayrack. The homestead also offers tastings of homemade sheep’s cheese.
Culture and History
The Laško Museum presents the town’s historical development from prehistoric times onward. Its three permanent exhibitions focus on “Laško – A Journey through Time”, the brewing industry and spa tourism, and the geology of the Laško area. The museum is housed in a renovated old market barn on Aškerčev trg. It is included in several guided tour programmes and is also open to individual visitors.
On Orožnov trg, a depiction of Medusa points to the settlement of the Laško area as early as Roman times. Jurklošter Carthusian Monastery was founded in the 12th century; a defensive tower and the Church of St Maurice remain in the Gračnica Valley.
