Culture and History
Zgornji trg is Šentjur’s old market square and was first mentioned in 1340 as a settlement around the church of Saint George. The first mention of the town of Šentjur is also connected with the church of Saint George in a document dating from 1340. The present-day church was built between 1708 and 1721 on the site of an early Gothic church. It is a Baroque building with a nave, side chapels and an attached bell tower.
Ipavec House has stood in Šentjur’s Zgornji trg since 1760; it is the birthplace of the Ipavec dynasty and houses a permanent exhibition about the Ipavec family. The Šentjur TIC is also located in the same area, opposite the parish church of Saint George, together with the Zakladi Rifnika museum collection.
Galerija Zgornji trg Šentjur is located in the former cellars of the residents of Ipavčeva 17 in Zgornji trg. Five to six exhibitions by local and visiting artists are held there each year. The collection on display also includes a plague monument from Marija Dobje bearing the year 1641. Šentjur also has a permanent exhibition about notable performers in swing, gospel and spiritual music. The performers featured there began their successful musical careers in Šentjur in 1968.
Railways and Cycling Routes
The Museum of the Southern Railway Šentjur is located at the town’s railway station. It presents a reconstruction of the historic station from the period when the Graz–Celje railway line was established. Below the museum is the Winegrowers Learning Basement, where visitors can taste wines from local winemakers. Two 34-kilometre circular cycling routes with different names and itineraries are available for bicycle tours. “The Song of the Southern Railway” starts in Šentjur, passes the ponds of Blagovna and crosses Sveta Uršula hill above Dramlje before continuing to Hotunje and Ponikva. The “The Path of Good Energy” circular cycling route can be started at Zgornji trg in Šentjur, at Šentjur or Ponikva railway station, or in the car park by the bus stop in Dramlje. Regular bicycles and electric bicycles can be rented at nine stations in Šentjur and its surroundings.
Nature, Crafts and Family Activities
The nearby Rifnik Archaeological Park is open year-round. It preserves the foundations of two early Christian churches and seven houses, as well as fortification walls with guardhouses and a well. Lake Slivnica is also located near Šentjur. Its waters are suitable for water sports, while the surrounding area is suitable for walking, cycling and observing rare animals and plants.
The Mlin Umetnin experience includes a guided tour of the farmstead and pottery workshop, as well as materials for making an object that participants can take home with them. The pottery workshop takes place in Osredek, near Šentjur, in a more than 200-year-old mill whose waterwheel is still powered by water.
