The winter side of Kamnik is above all represented by Velika Planina: it preserves one of the oldest and best-preserved shepherds’ settlements of its kind in Europe. In spring, summer and autumn, there are numerous opportunities for hiking; in winter, snowshoeing, skiing and tobogganing are also available. The Preskar Museum is located in the heart of the shepherds’ settlement and is open daily during the grazing season.

Winter and Mountains

Among the most visited tourist destinations in the Municipality of Kamnik are the Kamnik Alps and the Kamniška Bistrica Valley. Velika Planina can be reached on foot or by cable car and chairlift. More challenging hiking trails to Velika Planina lead from the valley floor of the Kamniška Bistrica.

Near the source of the Kamniška Bistrica, the Veliki Predaselj and Mali Predaselj gorges cut the riverbed to a depth of up to 30 metres. A paved road leads through the valley to a mountain hut at the river’s source and is used by cyclists. The easily accessible side valley of the Kamniška Bela stream is home to the 30-metre-high Orglice Waterfall, a popular starting point for hikes.

Nature

The Veternica Cave on Velika Planina is a natural attraction known for snowfields that remain even in summer. Slightly more than 26% of the area of Kamnik is protected under Natura 2000.

A cycle path and a footpath run along the Kamniška Bistrica from Kamnik to Domžale and are suitable for all generations.

The medieval town of Kamnik is known for the Romanesque chapel on Mali grad. In the 15th century, it was surrounded by walls 3 to 10 metres high and a moat, and had four gates. Zaprice Castle preserves late Gothic elements, including balcony consoles and Gothic windows, but overall has a Renaissance appearance.

The exhibition “Reflections of Kamnik’s Millennia” conveys the ancient history to visitors with the help of preserved artefacts, replicas, reconstructions, folkloric traditions and audiovisual information. The exhibition “Stories in Stone – Lapidary” explores the two-thousand-year history of Kamnik and its surroundings through preserved stone artefacts.
