Kamnik: Accommodation, Culture and Landscape

One of the notable historical sites in Kamnik is a two-storey Romanesque chapel with a crypt. It has been preserved and is now considered one of the city’s most important landmarks.

Culture

The Intermunicipal Museum Kamnik has its exhibition rooms in Zaprice Castle above Kamnik, near the railway station and the bus stations. The Cultural Three-M (3 M) walk leads through units of this museum; visitors can choose the order of the stops themselves. The museum landscape also includes the exhibition Reflections of Kamnik’s Millennia with educational areas where visitors can learn about Roman games, coinage, ancient measurements and legends.

The Miha Maleš Gallery presents a permanent exhibition on the art history of Kamnik from the 18th to the 20th century. Works from the fields of sculpture, painting, architecture and photography are on display. In 1979, the gallery’s namesake, Miha Maleš, donated a total of 2,590 works to the city of Kamnik. The municipality housed this extensive donation the following year in a town house at Glavni trg 2. The View Gallery in the centre of Kamnik presents contemporary artistic creations.

The exhibition in Rudolf Maister’s birthplace is located at Šutna 23. It occupies part of the ground floor of a 19th-century town house and is situated near the parish church of Šutna. Šutna Street preserves characteristic shop signs and other signs of craftsmanship. The Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, a work by Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, is located in the Franciscan monastery in Kamnik. The Franciscan Library preserves around 10,000 books and volumes printed before the end of the 18th century.

The festival Dnevi narodnih noš in oblačilne dediščine in Kamnik dates back to 1966 and attracts more than 30,000 visitors every year.

Trails and Landscape

The Kamnik–Godič cycling connection is 3.2 kilometres long and runs mostly along the Kamniška Bistrica River. One route includes ten rest areas; some of them are equipped with unique wooden play equipment, information boards and bicycle stands.

In the vicinity of Kamnik, a paved road leads through the Kamniška Bistrica Valley to the mountain hut in Kamniška Bistrica. The source of the river of the same name is also located in the vicinity, in the Kamniška Bistrica Valley. The approximately 30-metre-high Orglice Waterfall is located in a side valley of the Kamniška Bela stream. Access to the pools below the waterfall is relatively easy, and the site is suitable for hiking.

A viewpoint in Kamnik can be reached via an easy ascent of approximately 30 minutes. In good weather, it offers panoramic views of the town centre and the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. There are themed walking trails in the hills around Snovik Thermal Spa.

Leisure and Enjoyment

The beach volleyball courts at Pod Skalo are located near the centre of Kamnik, next to the municipal Olympic swimming pool. The municipal swimming pool is located near the old town. A culinary tour leads around four breweries and is accompanied by suitable beer snacks.
