Mengusovce at the Foot of the High Tatras

Mengusovce lies at the foot of the High Tatras at an elevation of 825 metres above sea level. The village combines a high-mountain landscape with protected natural areas, hiking trails, historic buildings and local events. The transport connections are also part of the village’s character and include several destinations in the surrounding area.

Landscape

The elevation is reflected not only in the location of the village: the highest part of the cadastral area of Mengusovce lies at 1,040 metres above sea level. Mengusovce is also located in the buffer zone of the High Tatras National Park. To the north of the village lies the Jelšina Nature Reserve, which protects natural stands. The Bôrik Nature Reserve is located southeast of Mengusovce.

The surroundings of Mengusovce offer very beautiful views of the High and Low Tatras. Different landscapes and protected areas therefore meet in the nearby surroundings, without the village losing its own location at the foot of the High Tatras.

Hiking

There are opportunities for hiking in Mengusovce. The Batizovce–Gerlachov–Mengusovce–Štôla educational and hiking trail offers a more specific route through the landscape. It is intended for the general public and is also suitable for less experienced hikers, as well as children and older people.

The Kimbiark educational trail is 13 kilometres long. It leads via Bôrik to the outskirts of Mengusovce near the cemetery. The route thus connects a named natural area with the edge of the village settlement and complements the educational and hiking trail with another designated route.

Culture and Village Life

The architectural and religious heritage of Mengusovce includes several different examples. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle was remodelled in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The Evangelical church in Mengusovce is a Neoclassical building dating from 1840. An early Gothic baptismal font from the 13th century has also been preserved, as has a painted wooden ceiling from the 18th century.

Events are also part of the local calendar. Mengusovské rodeo is a regularly held equestrian event featuring Western-style competitions. On 22 November 2025, Mengusovce also hosted a cooking competition for kapustnica, a Slovak cabbage soup.

Arrival and Transport

A regular bus service runs via Mengusovce between Poprad, Svit, Vyšné Hágy and Štrbské Pleso, and back. For passenger trains, the Lučivná Kúpele stop is 1.5 kilometres from Mengusovce. In Vyšné Hágy, it is possible to change to the electric railway. Public transport therefore connects Mengusovce with Poprad, Svit, Vyšné Hágy and Štrbské Pleso; in Vyšné Hágy, you can change to the electric railway.
